Save the Plants

“It’s too hot“ is what I think outdoor plants are thinking this time of year especially the non native plants. They can’t escape into the blissful air conditioned indoors. So be a good sport and help them survive it and see the cooler months.

Firstly, I want you to make sure they have enough water. This can be done by setting your reticulation to go off in the early morning and late evening or hand water your plants at these times.

Next, if you can move potted plants to more shadier areas like under a big leafy friend (tree/big bush) or a sheltered patio. Especially if their leaves are prone to sunburn. If the plant is ground bound consider a shade cover to block out some sun. This could be as simple as throwing some shade cloth over them or making them their own little tent.

Protect the roots from direct sunlight/burning by applying manure/compost/mulch over them this will also help them retain some moisture from the morning watering.

Fertiliser is also a great idea to keep their nutrients in check because in hot weather they are likely to use up a lot of energy in order to try staying alive and growing.

Lastly, remove any dead foliage that the sun could use as kindling. Your plants want you to be fire safe. But don’t trim them back too much, they only need the dead foliage removed, leave the living for cooler months.

Also be kind to yourself never garden when it’s too hot. A light gardening in the morning or when the sun has gone down is enough or just call LeafeLife.
